Zoe Kramer May 3, 2023

Whether you’re planning a semester or an entire course abroad, studying in a new country can be a great experience. It gives you a chance to immerse yourself in a new culture, meet new people, explore, and possibly improve upon your language skills. However, it can also be an overwhelming process to figure out everything you need to get in order before you move. So, here are some tips for applying to university outside your home country.

Do Your Homework

The first step you’ll want to do is to carefully research your options. Take a look at the different programmes in countries you’re interested in until you’ve narrowed it down. Then, investigate that country’s application process and see what is different and what is the same as your home country. You may have to take additional steps to complete your application, but some parts of your home country application may also be transferable.

Keep Tabs On The Application Timeline

Make sure you know when the deadlines are going in. After all, there’s nothing worse than missing out on an opportunity just because you forgot about it! Plan to submit your application well in advance, and mark your calendar for when your decision is supposed to arrive.

Research Money Transfer And Bank Options

Once you’ve been accepted, the next step is to get everything in order to move. One of the most important things is to make sure you’ll have money to spend when you get there. Before you go, look into how you can transfer your money. You’ll likely need to open a new bank account in the country you’ll be living in. If your destination country has a different currency, you’ll want to find somewhere to exchange that has as few surcharges as possible.

Apply For Your Visa As Soon As Possible

Another important step when applying to a university outside your home country is to make sure you have your visa in order. Usually your university can help you with this. It is important to apply for your Visa as soon as you can, so that you receive it before you make the journey abroad.

Get A New SIM Card

Finally, you’ll need to get a new SIM card for your phone. This will give you a new phone number that you can use while you’re abroad. However, you will likely also want to find a way to either preserve your old phone number on the same device, or set up another line of communication so that you can stay in touch with friends and family back home.
