There’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with some good telly when the festive season is upon us. We all have expectations of having something good to watch, so what are the top picks from the BBC Christmas TV schedule 2022?
On the big day itself, there’s never a lot of time to watch TV. But there are a few moments in between the present opening, eating as much chocolate and turkey and pigs as possible, or going for a Christmas walk to pop the box on. You want to make sure it’s worth your time. For example, you could be using that time to find more chocolate.
It’s also not just about Christmas Day, but also the evenings leading up to Christmas when you just want to feel a bit festive with something good on the telly. This year, lots of our favourite programs are giving us special festive editions, with some classic films thrown in for good measure too.
The BBC Christmas TV Schedule 2022
We’re only a couple of days away from finding out exactly what is on and when for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. For now, here’s what’s in store from the BBC.
Call The Midwife
It really wouldn’t be Christmas without joining the Nonnatus nuns and midwives, would it? Typically on Christmas Day, BBC Media Centre has given us a brief taster of what’s in store this time around.
“It is December 1967 and with Christmas fast approaching, life in Poplar is returning to normal after the terrible train crash. Trixie (Helen George) arrives back from Portofino, looking poised and beautiful, much to the delight of Matthew (Olly Rix).”
With promises of drama, tears and even a talent show, the special is a slightly shorter 75 minutes but definitely won’t be short on enjoyment.
Would I Lie To You Christmas Special
The familiar faces of Rob Brydon, Lee Mack and David Mitchell are joined by a new bunch of liars, including Christopher Eccleston. The 30-minute special will bring some belly laughs to your Christmas viewing.
Strictly Come Dancing
The current series might have just ended, but it won’t be long until Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens. The 2022 Christmas special will see six celebrities take to the dance floor in the hopes of becoming the Christmas champion.

BBC Media Centre have said the following about the festive treat:
“Hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, the Christmas Special will include a merry musical performance and some spectacular group routines including the celebrities and their professional partners, guaranteed to spread Christmas cheer.”
The BBC have already confirmed that this will air on Christmas Day.
Ghosts Christmas Special
Our favourite funny dead people return in a Christmas 2022 special, with the ghosts planning a festive surprise for Alison.
With ambitious plans and Mike having to reassess their Christmas plans, Ghosts will be a feel-good funny watch this festive season.
Motherland Christmas Special: Last Christmas
The mums (and Kevin) are planning some blended Christmas celebrations. All of them have full houses, to say the least, with promises from Kevin of a Persian feast and Anne cooking for her 29 cousins and then some.
There are some questionable presents and Christmas gatherings that definitely aren’t awkward at all. Whatsoever.
Relatable, funny and festive — the Motherland Christmas special is another great watch this Christmas period.
Animated Specials
The BBC will be bringing another Julia Donaldson adaptation to our screens this Christmas. The Smeds and The Smoos is a half an hour special.
The BBC Media Centre have said:
“In this animated intergalactic adventure, the red Smeds and the blue Smoos must learn to overcome their differences and work together to find young Janet and Bill – who eloped to escape their families’ long-standing rivalries.”
The show features the voices of Adjoah Ando, Bill Bailey, Rob Brydon and Sally Hawkins.
Another adaptation coming this Christmas is Charlie Mackesy’s beloved The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, The Horse.
Here are some more details from the BBC Media Centre:
“A story of kindness, friendship, courage and hope for viewers of all ages in a heart-warming, hand-drawn traditionally animated film based on Charlie Mackesy’s book, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. The poignant and heartfelt journey follows the unlikely friendship of a boy, a mole, a fox and a horse travelling together in the boy’s search for home.”
