Trixie Mattel is one of those people who has her fingers in every single pie. She has been on RuPaul’s Drag Race twice, has a YouTube channel with 1.59 million subscribers, a podcast, her own make-up company and is now a DJ. Trixie also renovated a motel with her partner, which you can read about here.
As well as all this, Trixie is an acclaimed country music singer-songwriter. She currently has three studio albums out, with over five single in between these releases.
Now, Trixie has blessed us with another album, ‘The Blonde&Pink album’ to be released 24th June. In honour of this fourth album drop, here are some of your favourite Trixie Mattel songs from over the years.
Heavy Crown
Heavy Crown was part of Mattel’ third album, Moving Parts. This song was part of the soundtrack to the documentary Trixe Mattel: Moving Parts which followed Mattel’s rise to fame after RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as her subsequent country music career. It also showed the struggles of touring as Mattel went on her international tour in 2018, ’Now With Moving Parts’.
This song is heartfelt and truly displays Mattel’s vocal ability. It is your go-to country ballad all about how getting to the top does not mean that you have everything.
Hello Hello
In November 2021, Mattel released Hello Hello. This song is more pop than country, but she definitely pulls it off well. When talking with Esquire, Mattel said Hello Hello is a ’60s-inspired number, influenced by the TV shows Brady Bunch and Hullabaloo.’
The music video for this song is probably one of the best things about it. It sees Mattel and two backing dancers perform a routine choreographed by Drag Race alumni Laganja Estranja.
In her Esquire interview, Mattel said ‘I wanted to spend all my time and money on the dancing so the styling and shooting was all very clean and minimal to feature the movement.’
Malibu
This song comes from Mattel’s 2020 album Barbara which was less country and more folk-rock. Despite releasing the album in cold late November, her song Malibu, all about hitting the beach, seemed a land well with audiences.
Malibu is your classic beach vibe bop that will get you clapping your hands and tapping your feet in the sand. Mattel sings to a guy who is just what she has been looking for: relaxed, cool and nothing serious. She sings, ‘You’ll be fine when you learn to move slow’.
Jesse Jesse
Jesse Jesse is a hilarious and heartfelt country-pop song dedicated to the actor, Jesse Eisenberg. Mattel cleverly makes reference to several of Eisenberg’s films throughout the song, such as Cursed (2004) and Zombieland (2009).
Mattel also mentions Eisenberg’s marriage, ‘I know you’re married and separation can be scary. Well, now you see her, now you don’t.’ This line is also a reference to another Eisenberg film from 2013, Now You See Me.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Mattel said, ‘Three years ago, I wouldn’t have been secure enough in my vision for Trixie to be like, “Yup, I’m writing about Jesse Eisenberg”. But I’m in a place now where, if my instinct that day is to write a song about Jesse Eisenberg, then that’s what I’m writing about.’
