Viola Davis has been named the latest star added to the cast of The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Seven years since the final of The Hunger Games hit our screens the prequel is coming to cinemas this November after it’s book release in 2020.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
In 2020 Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games trilogy, released a spin-off prequel to the series titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, on which the upcoming movie will be based.
The narrative follows an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, who ultimately becomes the tyrannical leader of Panem in the OG story.
In this prequel, we see him chosen to be a mentor in the 10th Hunger Games, where teenagers must fight to the death. The book (and we assume the coming film) explores the ‘Dark Days’ which led to the failed rebellions in Panem.
Nina Jacobson, who produced The Hunger Games films, alongside her producing partner Brad Simpson, is already on board for this fifth instalment of the series.
Executive producers will be Tim Palen, Jim Miller and the author of the whole series Suzanne Collins. Whereas, Scott O’Brien and Meredith Wieck are overseeing the production on behalf of Lionsgate.
Hunger Games Prequel Cast
The most recent add to the prequel’s casl, Davis, is set to play Dr Volumnia Gaul, head game maker of the 10th annual Hunger Games.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter director Francis Lawrence described Davis’ character ‘as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable.’
Davis has proven her ability to play convincing and feared villains such as her portrayal of Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad.
Tom Blyth (Robin Hood) is set to play a young Coriolanus Snow and other confirmed cast memebers are: Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and Josh Andrés Rivera (West Side Story).
