It felt like 2016 again this year when The 1975 surged in popularity again after releasing their new album Being Funny in a Foreign Language. It’s fair to say no one knew their sell-out arena tour would have quite as many odd moments as it has done so far. Part stage show, part concert, it’s definitely an experience that will leave you entertained. Here are the weirdest moments of The 1975 tour that have gone viral on social media.

Kissing fans

The part everybody is talking about, and definitely one of the weirdest (and most controversial) moments of The 1975’s tour – Matty Healy just can’t keep his lips to himself. During the band’s hit song Robbers, it’s become tradition on this tour for the 33-year-old frontman, to kiss a fan. It began at their Las Vegas show on the American leg of the tour, where he got a fan called Isabella up on stage and passionately kissed her.

At first, social media thought this was a one-off, but it became clear after each show that the kissing wasn’t going to stop. At some shows, he kissed more than one fan and even sucked on their fingers.

Bringing out Taylor Swift

The 1975 often bring out surprise special guests but this one was next level. The London crowd were lucky enough to experience seeing both Taylor Swift and The 1975 in one night.

Matty even put the kissing antics on hold as he didn’t want to “disrespect the queen,” the queen being Taylor. She sang her hit single Anti-Hero for the first time live and also covered The 1975’s The City. Fans went wild on social media, claiming they would have done anything to be there.

Eating raw meat

Yes, you read that right. One of the most bizarre on stage habits of Healy is eating raw meat. He’s done it multiple times now and it’s becoming a trademark to the performance.

We don’t know whether to feel entertained, concerned, or horrified. It was a huge slab of raw meat, after all.

Pranking Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

At The 1975’s most recent gig in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, the band managed to prank everyone there in an equally cruel and funny way. When they opened the door to reveal a guest star for the night, the on-screen text read ‘Harry Styles’ so of course screams erupted and fans went crazy. Only for Lewis Capaldi to walk out instead.

We think this was definitely Lewis’s idea and it definitely caused a laugh on social media. The singer then went on to cover Love Story by Taylor Swift.

The weird autotune

Finally, the internet cannot get enough of Healy talking in autotune. The most famous so far being Matty saying “don’t like menthols,” with the autotune on.

It’s a sound you now can’t escape on TikTok. People have even started putting together compilations of the singer saying random phrases in autotune.

So there you have it. Those are the weirdest moments of The 1975’s latest tour. Whether you’re a fan of The 1975 or not, you can’t argue that they know how to kick up a fuss and get people talking. Even people that don’t agree with the antics are still talking about it, which is great promotion for the band. Any publicity is good publicity, right?
