What Is A Broadcast Channel On Instagram?

Zoe Kramer March 10, 2023

Instagram, through its parent company Meta, has introduced a new feature called Broadcast Channels. This feature is somewhat different from the other features that Instagram has to offer, such as stories, DMs and reels. It offers a particular space for those users with a larger platform to connect with their audience. So, if you’re curious to find out what a Broadcast Channel is, here is a guide to what they are, who can make them, and where they are available.

What Is A Broadcast Channel On Instagram?

Broadcast Channels are a messaging tool where a creator can publicly communicate with their audience. In some respects, it is similar to the DM feature, since it takes on the same overall appearance and functionality. Like with DMs, in a Broadcast Channel you can send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, and more. However, the main difference is that instead of a one to one line of communication or a group of friends, Broadcast Channels are designed for one creator to speak with an entire audience. This makes them an ideal tool for influencers, artists, and anyone with a wider following.

Who Can Make Them?

Currently, Broadcast Channels are not available to the general public. The feature is being tested out with a select group of influencers being granted access to the feature. However, if you are interested in creating a Broadcast Channel, you can join the waitlist for early access.

How To Join A Broadcast Channel

If you’re interested in seeing what a Broadcast Channel looks like for yourself, you can try out some of the currently available broadcast channels, such as those run by skier Mikaela Shiffrin or streamer Valkyrae. To join, first make sure you’re following the creator’s account. From there, you can join by either clicking on the notification when the creator adds a message, using the link in their bio, or by tapping the ‘join channel’ sticker in one of their stories.

Are Broadcast Channels Available In The UK?

Currently, the feature is only being tested with a few US-based creators. So unfortunately, if you’re in the UK, you won’t be able to make your own Broadcast Channel just yet. However, you can still join channels from the UK.

Instagram is planning to expand access to the feature in the future, including versions available on Messenger and Facebook.
