What Is Birmingham University Known For?

First chartered in 1900, the University of Birmingham is the original ‘red brick’ university and a member of the Russell Group. It is located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, a thirty minute walk from the city centre. As the second largest city in the UK, Birmingham has a lot to offer students. Almost 40% of the population is under 25, making it a very young city, with a fantastic nightlife scene and lots of business and social opportunities. This is plenty of reason to study at Birmingham on its own, but you’ll also want to determine the quality of its course in your desired subject area before you apply. So here are the subjects that the University of Birmingham is known for.

Is Birmingham University Good For Medicine?

The University of Birmingham’s College of Medical and Dental Sciences is very large, with approximately 3800 undergraduate and 1400 postgraduate students. This makes it great for those who want a large university experience but not as great for those who prefer a close-knit feel. It’s world-renowned and boasts several impressive alumni, such as Leon Abrams, who developed the first variable-rate pacemaker. The university is very close to the QE hospital, and has connections with various hospitals around the city, offering a wide range of different GP and hospital placement experiences for students.

Is University of Birmingham Good For Law?

Another subject the University of Birmingham is known for is law. It comes in 18th for law in the UK according to the Complete University Guide and 28th according to the Guardian. The Birmingham Law School offers a variety of different courses spanning from undergraduate, masters, and doctoral studies as well as plenty of research opportunities. It is also home to the CEPLER (Centre for Employability, Professional Legal Education and Research) which is a great resource for students to take their theoretical knowledge and put it into practice through a variety of different experiences.

Is University of Birmingham Good For Computer Science?

For Computer Science, Birmingham is ranked 18th in the UK according to the Complete University Guide and 27th according to the Guardian. One of its main draws is its research facilities, which cover a wide array of areas including robotics, artificial intelligence, computation theory, computational life sciences and more. They offer BSc and MSci programmes in the field, with options to take a year in industry or study abroad. Overall, Birmingham may not be #1 in computer science, but it offers a solid degree in good standing.
