Birmingham

Like the look of the University of Birmingham? Here is all you need to know, starting with some key facts about UoB:

  • Founded in 1825
  • Five campuses: Edgbaston, Selly Oak, Pritchatts Park, Summer Row and Harborne
  • Accommodates students in 19 halls of residence
  • Around 23,000 students

The history of UoB is as fascinating as it is long. Founded as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery, it has been at the forefront of education and research ever since.

UoB has a reputation for excellence in many subject areas, but it’s particularly known for its strong programs in engineering, life sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Birmingham, as a city, has loads to offer students. Whether it’s heading to one of the many museums, galleries or concerts, or exploring the famous landmarks like the Bull Ring or the Library of Birmingham, there’s never a dull moment.

Student life at UoB is also a big draw. There’s a vibrant student community and, when it comes to nightlife, there’s no shortage of options. From the legendary O2 Academy to the chilled-out pubs and bars of the Jewellery Quarter, there’s something for everyone.

Finally, let’s not forget the incredible alumni of UoB. From Nobel Prize winners to successful entrepreneurs and politicians, UoB has produced some of the most influential people in the world. To name a few: JRR Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings; Michaela Cole, the actor and screenwriter; and Sir Norman Foster, the architect behind some of the world’s most iconic buildings.
