What Is The AI Trend On Instagram?

Zoe Kramer December 5, 2022

The technology to make AI generated art has been around for a while now. The programme DALL-E and its successor DALL-E 2 have made headlines in the past, with many speculating as to the potential effects the technology could have on the art world. Some predict that AI will never be able to replace what a human artist can do and compare it with the invention of the camera. The camera certainly changed the art world, but it didn’t bring painting to a halt. Others predict that the availability of AI technology will put commercial artists out of business and radically change the art economy.

The latest developments in AI art have to do with its use on social media. You can now use a programme called LENSA to create an avatar for Instagram. Users are also using a variety of different AI art generators and posting the results. So if you want to know more about what the AI trend on Instagram is, here’s everything you need to know about this technology as well as how you can use it yourself.

Explaining the AI Art Generator

While AI art has become a huge trend on Instagram, the app doesn’t have its own built in AI art generator. So if you want to try your hand at putting together your own creation, you’ll have to head to a different app first and then return to Instagram with your finished result.

Some of the most popular options are Dream Booth, DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and NightCafe. The best one to use will depend on what you’re trying to create, but each of these generators can produce unique and visually stunning images.

How these images get generated is pretty complicated, but here’s the basics of how it works. For some, a user inputs a text prompt, then the AI compares that text against with captions and alt text for images in their vast databases. It then ‘decomposes‘ the relevant images and reverse engineers them into something new. Others use almost no human input whatsoever, and simply use machine learning to replicate the style of a certain artist or create hybrid styles.

These technologies are readily available to the public now, so you can download any one of the aforementioned generators and give it a go for yourself. It is worth noting that some of these services charge subscription fees, so it’s up to you whether it’s worth it to try your hand at creating some AI images of your own.
