As I have been scrolling through my TikTok for you page recently, I’ve noticed a theory that keeps popping up – the red nail theory. After seeing endless clips of girls deciding to get their nails done in the colour red, I dug a little deeper, hoping for an explanation. Was it a manifestation technique or simply another BeautyTok trend? Here is everything you need to know.
What Is The Red Nail Theory?
Essentially, the red nail theory is that, if you paint your nails red, you will get more attention from love interests, specifically men. Apparently, it helps you appear more attractive and that this attraction exists because men remember seeing their mothers and teachers wearing red nail polish when they were children.

Who Came Up With The Concept?
The concept became popular thanks to the TikToker Robyn Delmonte, better known as GirlBoss Town.
She explained that when she wears red nails she gets a lot more compliments from men: ‘Every time I have red nails, men notice and compliment them. I always thought red was a grandma nail colour, but then I started to wonder about it.’
She said: ‘When we were growing up, women had red nails a lot, especially our mothers. Guys are attracted to red nails because it reminds them of their mothers when they were growing up, taking care of them.’
Do we believe it?
Sigmund Freud would love this one and I’m not sure how much I believe it. There is very little psychological evidence to back it up, although it is definitely fun to think about and who doesn’t love a red nail? At the end of the day, attraction is a lot more than just what colour your fingernails are. That said, there may well be some logic to it for at least a few people.
