Tobe Nwigwe stars in Mo Netflix’s latest comedy series based on a fictionalised version of comedian Mohammed ‘Mo’ Amer, but who is the rapper?
Mo dropped on the streaming site on August 24 and since has had rave reviews for the story, the characters, and the cast.
Mo Netflix’s Comedy Series
Mo follows the story of Mo Najjar – a fictionalised version of Amer – as he straddles the line between two cultures, three languages and a ton of stress as a Palestinian refugee constantly living one step away from asylum on the path to U.S. citizenship.
His family — including his resilient and spiritual mother, sister and older brother — flee to Houston, Texas. Laughing the pain away, Mo learns to adapt to his new world – although getting ahead in life proves to come with several setbacks.
The new comedy is created and executive produced by comedians Amer (The Vagabond, Black Adam) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy, Mr. Robot).
Mo is executive produced by Ravi Nandan and Hallie Sekoff for A24, Harris Danow (Little Fires Everywhere, Daisy Jones & The Six), Luvh Rakhe (Dave, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and series Director Solvan “Slick” Naim (It’s Bruno!, Snowfall).
Who is Tobe Nwigwe?
In Mo Nwigwe stars as Mo’s childhood friend Nick, but the 35-year-old previously shot to fame in 2020 for his viral song ‘I Need You To (Breonna Taylor)’.
Born in Houston, Texas, the rapper initially had plans to be an NFL player – he even got considered for the draft after playing in college, but a Lisfranc ligament tear left him unable to continue to play.
Nwigwe first pursued a music career when he was given encouragement from the motivational speaker Eric Thomas, and since 2016 he’s focused on writing and producing music.
In 2020 he released the song ‘I Need You To (Breonna Taylor)’, claiming God gave him a vision to do the song as a public service announcement, according to NBC. His album, The Pandemic Project, was also released that year.
