The long-awaited return of BBC’s crime drama Luther is nearly upon us. Though it’s in a slightly different format than we’re used to, that hasn’t stopped the anticipation. Knowing that Luther: The Fallen Sun will be on Netflix, will Luther be released in cinemas too?
Fans have waited long enough for the latest and possibly the last instalment of the psychological crime drama, Luther. Starting in 2010, the show had 5 series taking us to January 2019. It was then announced that a film was in the making in September 2021.
The film had been first spoken of all the way back in 2013. 10 years later, it is finally happening.
What Is The Luther Film About?
Luther: The Fallen Sun will be a direct continuation of the TV series. Looking at Netflix Media Centre, the film will see Luther, played by Idris Elba, struggle with his past failures, having to break out of prison to finish the job he started.
At the end of series 5, it appeared as if Alice, Luther’s on/off lover had died. Even more than that, Luther was then arrested after a showdown that resulted in the death of his partner, Halliday.

This wasn’t the time Luther was wanted for murder, after he went on the run after being framed for his ex-wife’s murder at the end of series 1.
Although not much is known about the specifics of the film, we do know that it will also star Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley.
Will Luther Be Released In Cinemas?
Luther: The Fallen Sun will be released in select cinemas before it is available to stream on Netflix.
According to Digital Spy, the film will be released in cinemas on February 24. Netflix will then release the Luther movie the following month on March 10. It is not certain what cinemas will be showing the Luther movie, so keep an eye out at your local cinemas if you’re eager to watch it on the big screen.
It also isn’t certain if any more familiar faces will be returning for the film. The TV series also starred Ruth Wilson as Alice and Paul McGann as Luther’s frenemy, Mark. Alice looked to have fallen to her death at the end of series 5, but it wouldn’t be surprising if she faked her death again. Luther also relies on Mark, a lot, and if he’s breaking out of prison and on the run then he will definitely need a friend.
Yesterday, the Luther teaser trailer was released much to fans’ delight. However, it definitely didn’t give much away. That doesn’t mean that our excitement wasn’t ramped up though.
Whilst we hope there are no men in creepy masks or hiding under beds, or even hands in blenders, we also know that’s too much to ask for. With the Netflix budget, no doubt the psychological horror will only be increased for the Netflix Luther movie.
Whether you want to see that on the big screen is up to you, but at least you have the option!
