Best Student Bars In Cardiff

Zoe Kramer December 5, 2022

Dancing at clubs can be a great time, but sometimes you just want to sit down at a bar or pub and have a chat over some affordable drinks and food. There’s no shortage of nightlife in Cardiff, and it can be difficult to tell which bars will be worth your while. So if you’re new to Cardiff, or want to explore some new options for going out, here are some of the best bars for students.

The Woodville

Situated in the heart of Cathays, the Woodville is a great go-to hangout for students. With reasonably priced pub fare and pints, the Woodville has a friendly and casual atmosphere. They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas. You can go there to catch some football, for society socials, or just to get together with friends.

The Taf

The Taf is the Cardiff University Student Union’s dedicated student pub. They run a number of deals throughout the week, including Tapas Tuesdays, Madri Mondays and a Sunday roast. Perfect for studying during the day and getting rowdy at night, the Taf is an essential component of the Cardiff student experience.

Gassy’s

A Cathays favourite, Gassy’s is another go-to more match nights and more. It’s a lively atmosphere on the weekends and a little more chill during the week. You can play some pool or spend some time playing on their retro gaming consoles. They offer 2-for-1 cocktails as well as burger, fries and a drink for £8.50. They also offer a bottomless brunch which is perfect for the morning after a night out.

BrewDog

If you’re into craft beer, BrewDog is a great place to try out a selection while you socialize. They have a wide array of different brews, from their classic Punk IPA to the Planet Pale, Hazy Jane or Lost Lager. Regardless of what kinds of beer you like, you’re bound to find something you enjoy. They also offer a selection of burgers, wings and salads, including vegan options.

Kong’s

Located in the city centre, Kong’s is a basement dive with a lot of character and a retro feel. When you walk down the steps, you’re greeted with an array of vintage arcade games, as well as table tennis, table football and pinball. With all of these options, it’s certainly not a place you’ll get bored. They offer a wide range of craft beers, famously good burgers, and more. Aim for non-peak hours to get the best chance of securing a game.
