It’s that time of year again. Halloween has come and gone, an autumn chill is in the air, and it’s time for Guy Fawkes day. Remember, remember, the fifth of November…or have one too many and forget! Here are some cocktail recipes that are perfect for Bonfire Night, whether you’re after something explosively tasty or a cozy drink to warm up with while you watch the fireworks.
Maple Old Fashioned
If you’re looking for something spirited and seasonal, the Maple Old Fashioned is the perfect choice for you. Simply mix your whiskey, bitters and syrup with a splash of water until the syrup has dissolved, then top up with an ice cube and a garnish.
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup
- 60 ml bourbon or rye whiskey
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Still or sparkling water
- Orange peel or maraschino cherry for garnish
Apple Cider Mimosa
Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy something fruity. The apple cider in this recipe refers to the unfiltered apple beverage you can get in the Americas, not the fizzy, alcoholic type of cider, but you can substitute it with a tart apple juice. Mix your cinnamon and your sugar together, wet the rims of your glasses with water, and press the glasses into the sugar mixture. Then, simply mix your juice and your bubbly and garnish with an apple slice.
- 60 ml unsweetened apple juice
- 60 ml Champagne or Prosecco
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- Apple slices for garnish

White Russian
There’s a reason why the White Russian has become a classic cocktail. The mixture of coffee and cream flavours makes it a delicious pick-me-up. Plus, it’s simple to make. Just fill a glass with ice, add your vodka and Kahlua, then finish by pouring the cream over top.
- 60 ml vodka
- 30 ml Kahlua
- 1 splash heavy cream
Hot Toddy
A Hot Toddy is the perfect cozy drink to warm you up on Bonfire Night. Grab a mug or heat-safe glass, and pour in your honey and your choice of whiskey or dark rum. Top up with boiling water and stir, adding in lemon juice to taste. To garnish, place your cinnamon stick in the mug, add the cloves, and grate the nutmeg over top.
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 25 ml whiskey or dark rum
- Hot water as needed
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- cinnamon stick
- 3 cloves
- nutmeg
Mulled Wine
While it’s usually associated with Christmas, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy mulled wine in November. It’s easy to make in a large batch, and a guaranteed crowd pleaser, especially on a cold night. Slice your orange and place it in a pot, then add you wine and brandy. Add your sweetener, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves. Warm the mixture over the stove until it begins to steam, and reduce the heat if it begins to bubble. Simmer for at least 15 minutes, then strain and serve.
- 1 bottle red wine (750 ml)
- 60 ml brandy
- 1 tbsp honey, sugar, or maple syrup
- 1 orange
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 3 star anise
- 4 cloves
Whatever you opt for, we hope you enjoy your Bonfire Night cocktails and have a great night.
