The festive season has well and truly blown your bank. With the presents, drinks, meals out, and constant socialising, you need a month off, right? Well, here are five cheap things students can do in January to save some money and still have fun!
Explore your area
We often get so used to doing what everyone else does and finding new things all the time that we forget what’s actually right on our doorstep. Walk around your local park, along the beach or maybe window shop through your town centre. Sometimes, when you don’t have the money to spend on yourself, it’s fun to start making gift ideas for upcoming birthdays.
There could be so much more right outside your house that you don’t even realise so just take a moment to look around!

Go on a bike ride
While the weather might still be chilly you can wrap up and go on a bike ride wherever you are! Make the most of every day and get on some wheels for the day! You’ll probably find that you have a lot of fun doing something totally different for a change and it’s FREE! If you’re nervous to cycle on the road, just look for your local cycling path!
If this isn’t for you, why not try rollerskating or skateboarding? There are so many active things that can keep you busy for the whole day!

Pick up a new hobby
Fancy doing some painting? Reading a new book? Playing football? Whatever you’ve always been longing to do, give it a go now. January is a time of reflection so why not use this month to start something totally new? Try digging through your garage or loft and see if there’s anything that hasn’t come out in a while. You might find something from years ago that you forgot you once loved.
Go for walks
Socialising can be difficult when you’re trying to be ‘cheap’. The easy thing to ask your mates is to go for a casual drink, for what usually turns into ten drinks. But when you’re trying to save money drinking can be a dangerous game! One always ends up leading to another.
That’s why you could try going on long walks with some friends. Stop off for a cheap coffee and catch up while walking along your local beach or park. This way you get some fresh air and a gossip too!
Have a games night
Call your friends up and invite them to yours for a games night! You can get some cheap wine in or you can all just stock up on the cuppas but either way, it’ll be cheaper than a night out! Tell everyone to bring a game of their choice and spend the night rolling dice! You’ll end up with a bundle of games from Monopoly to Twister and it’ll all be free!
So if you’re trying to spend less this January then give these tips a go!
There’s always a fun alternative to spending money and once you’ve built up a bit of saving from January you can celebrate a little harder in February!
