Going to the doctor can often cause a lot of anxiety and stress. If you are someone that suffers from this, then keep reading!
Here are a few things you can try to cope with the anxiety and stress that sometimes come with having to visit the doctor.
Focus on your mindset
It’s a lot easier said than done, but try to focus on your mindset. Remember that doctors see so many things every day so, whether you’re going for an ordinary check-up or a new problem, they will have dealt with similar matters before. Remember that these things happen all the time and, while it may be significant to you, you are one of many patients that the NHS will see just that day.
The doctors are there to help and guide you, so remember that you’ll come out feeling better off! It will be worth it.
Try to calm down
If your stress and anxiety affect your body physically, try doing some meditation and focusing on your breathing. Give yourself 5-10 minutes before your appointment to feel calm and focus on your breathing. You’ll then be able to go into your appointment with a clear head and an open mind.
Prepare
If you’re really worried about going to the doctor, try to find the time to prepare some notes. Write down all of your symptoms and book an appointment sooner rather than later to avoid the risk of backing out. You can even hand the doctor your notes as you walk in, so you don’t have to explain your symptoms in any detail, and they’ll still know what you’re going through without making you feel uncomfortable.

Arrange a call
If you are really struggling with the idea of going to the doctor, try to at least arrange a phone call. It’s extremely accessible now to book a phone call appointment, when the doctor will simply ask about your symptoms and support you over the phone. If they would like to see you based on your symptoms, they will discuss what to do next.
This means you can get what you might feel is the worst part over with and only have to go in if you really need to.
Relax
While you can try all these tips, we know it’s not easy.
Try to relax the best way you can and treat yourself afterwards. Facing your fears and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone deserves reward, so make sure you look after yourself before and after going to the doctor! Why not buy yourself something you’ve had your eye on for ages or get a takeaway tonight? You deserve it.
Whatever the reason you’re thinking of going to the doctor, try these tips and take a deep breath. You will be ok, and you will feel better once you have been.
You’ve got this!
