BeReal has come into the forefront of the social media scene this past year. This is in large part due to its unique approach to how users engage with the app. Whereas many other social media apps involve curated self-image and picture-perfect feeds, BeReal embraces spontaneity. Once a day, at a random time, users are sent a prompt to share where they are or what they’re doing during that particular time. Instead of looking perfect, it’s all about sharing unplanned, goofy and flawed moments with your friends. Most recently, the app has introduced the ability to add music by linking your account with Spotify and Apple Music. So, if you want to give it a go, here is how to add music to your BeReal.

To share what you’re listening to with your friends, first open the BeReal app and choose your profile icon on the top right of the screen. Tap the three dots to navigate to your settings menu. Then, select Features and then Audio. From there, you can tap Connect, which will prompt you to enter your login details for your music streaming service of choice.
Once your accounts are linked, you’re all set. Rather than choosing a specific song to overlay over your story, whatever you’re listening to while recording your BeReal will automatically pop up for your friends to see. It will display beneath the caption and location of your post.
However, if you want to listen to music without it being included in the post, you can do that, too. Select the audio icon in the bottom right of your post, and it will display what you’re listening to. From there, you can switch the feature off so you can continue listening to your music privately.
The feature could potentially help retain users on the app, since it has seen a decline in its userbase in the past few months. It had half as many active users in February 2023 as it did in October 2022. Being able to share music, however, could add renewed appeal. After all, who doesn’t love sharing a new favourite track with friends? Music can also serve to highlight and add extra atmosphere to the authentic moments on the app. However, whether it will be enough to bring the app back to prominence remains to be seen.
