Zoe Kramer March 16, 2023

Dark mode has been an increasingly common feature across a variety of different social media apps. For some, it can help prevent eye strain and make text easier to read, especially at night. It can help slow down the drain of battery life on your phone. Others simply prefer the look on an aesthetic level. Regardless of your reasons for preferring dark mode, if you’re a Snapchat user, you’re in luck. The app, like many others, has a way to change the appearance so the background is black. Here is how to get dark mode on Snapchat.

What Is Dark Mode?

While it’s increased in popularity, many are still unfamiliar with dark mode. This is because, for the most part, light mode is the default for apps and websites. So, unless you actively seek to change your layout, you might not even know that it exists. As the name suggests, the two are opposites. Light mode involves a layout with a white background and black text, whereas dark mode involves a layout with a black background and white text. Both can also involve different colours as well, but usually have black and white as the main focus. Everyone has a different preference, but many find dark mode more visually appealing and/or easier to read.

If you’re interested in trying out what dark mode looks like on Snapchat, it’s a fairly simple process. First, open up Snapchat and tap your Bitmoji to navigate to your profile. Then, select the gear icon in the top right corner to open up settings. Scroll down until you see the “App Appearance” option and tap it. Then, you will be presented with three options. You can choose “Match System” to have the layout match whatever you have set in your phone’s settings. You can choose “Always Light” to keep the app on light mode indefinitely, or “Always Dark” to keep the app on dark mode indefinitely.

Does It Work On Android?

Unfortunately, dark mode is only available for Snapchat on IOS. The feature was first rolled out in 2019 and hasn’t been featured in any updates for the Android version, so it’s safe to say it probably won’t be included any time soon. However, using Android developer mode in settings, users can force a dark mode onto the entire system, which would include Snapchat.
