There’s nothing quite like the guilt of realising you’ve spent half the day on TikTok. Scrolling has become second nature, with the indent on our phone-using pinkie finger as proof of our mindless scrolling. It isn’t all bad. Social media has helped humans connect, and created important platforms for learning. But if you feel your screen-time is taking over, here are some ways to enjoy life without your phone.

Turn off your notifications

Taking your mind away from the constant buzzing of your phone gets easier if you turn off notifications. The do-not-disturb feature is a blessing. Check your phone on your own terms, and feel the stress float away.

Limit your screen time

There are many apps that can help you limit your screen time. For some reason people find it easier to stick to apps telling you when you can and can’t use your phone. You can also limit your screen time in settings. Many parents use this feature to limit their children’s screen time.

Train your brain

Getting over your phone addiction isn’t easy, so take small steps to get there. Try watching an entire film without checking your phone. Leave your phone at home when going to the shop or to the gym, or anywhere else that you feel safe enough to go without it.

Turn your phone off

Turning your phone off is a great way to remind yourself to stop checking it. It’s also a great way to be present in the company you’re with. 

Don’t use your phone in bed

The most useful advice is to stop using your phone in bed. Minutes can turn into hours in the comfort of your own bed. Try to avoid the glaring screen at night, but also make sure it’s not the first thing you check in the morning. Take the phone away from your routine.
