After rumours started circulating later online, many fans of the site think Instagram is closing down on July 28. We have a look if there is anything truth in the claims and how it all started.

It’s one of the biggest social media sites out there, with over a billion users, so the thought of it closing has worried many across the world. Yes, posts started popping up all over the internet claiming Instagram will shut down on July, but no one is too sure why.

Is Instagram Closing Down On July 28?

No, Instagram is not closing at the end of the month.

Meta, who owns the site as well as Facebook, has not confirmed any permanent or temporary closures. It seems that the only thing stemmed from rumours dating back across the years and it’s recently gone viral again.

In fact, it looks like it started back in 2020, with rumours starting to spread during the lockdown. However, three years on it seems the speculation is back with a vengeance.

In 2023, the rumours are now all over TikTok, leaving many in the comment sections confused.

Some have posted about receiving this message supposedly from Instagram and using it to tell others that the site is closing. However, this is definitely fake and there are no truth in the claims.

So, there’s no need to download all your data or start rapid-fire posting your favourite pictures, Instagram isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Why People Think Instagram Is Closing

People believe the site is closing because of a report that came out about Meta earlier in the year.

This was then escalated when some news outlets began reporting that Meta was considering closing down Instagram in Europe.

That, combined with the $1.3 billion fine that Mark Zuckerberg wants to appear, resulted in the belief that Instagram is closing down. Then when you had posts from years ago suggesting it would be July 28, it caused this internet mayhem of uncertainty.

Those who have been on the internet for a little while will know that rumours like this circulate pretty often. And, until you hear it from Instagram, you shouldn’t ever believe it.

This user pointed out the obvious. Clearly, the posts started off as engagement grabs, but escalated into a lot of confusion.

In fact, the site has only just added new features like music and songs to Notes.

So, there is no reason to worry. The lesson learned here is not to believe everything you see on the internet.
