Spotify HiFi Still Not Released Despite Announcement 2 Years Ago

Jasmyne Jeffery January 21, 2023

Spotify excited music fans with their announcement that they would be introducing Spotify HiFi. That was…two years ago and there haven’t been a lot of details since. With other streaming apps offering something similar, Spotify users are questioning if Spotify is ever going HiFi, or if the feature has been cancelled altogether.

In February 2021, Spotify announced that they would be going HiFi. The original statement said, and still says that it would be coming later that year. 2021 came and went, and so did 2022 and there’s still no sign of Spotify HiFi. It’s now coming up to two years since they excited music fans and there’s still nothing. We’re all wondering if it actually ever will.

What Is Spotify HiFi?

The new higher-tier subscription would be available to Spotify premium members in certain regions. They would be able to stream music of much higher quality, comparable to that of CDs. Music will be delivered in a lossless audio format, giving users a lot more depth and clarity when listening to their favourite songs.

Spotify says that higher-quality music is something that users have been using for a little while. So, they’ve given it to them…in principle.

The feature will be available to everyone eventually and can be streamed through their devices and Spotify connect speakers.

Now, it’s just a matter of waiting.

Is Spotify Ever Going HiFi?

Spotify still has plans to implement the feature and subscription tier, but they’ve no longer attached a date to their plans.

A statement was then released on the Spotify community page after fans speculated what was happening:

“We know that HiFi quality audio is important to you. We feel the same, and we’re excited to deliver a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium users in the future. But we don’t have timing details to share yet. We will of course update you here when we can.”

This update was still from more than a year ago, so it seems that Spotify are struggling to deliver the HiFi tier. Nevertheless, it is still something they are striving towards.

So, to anyone wondering if Spotify HiFi has been cancelled, then no. The introduction of better-quality audio has just been put on an indefinite hiatus. It’s not entirely sure what’s caused the significant delays, but the music service will want to give it to users as soon as possible. Already, their biggest competitor, Apple Music, has introduced lossless audio — and they don’t charge any more for it.

Hopefully, it won’t be long until Spotify give their users upgraded sound quality. As it’s been so long, many are forgetting that they planned to introduce HiFi; speculation about its cancellation is understandable. Anyone sticking to their guns is just going to wait it out. Who knows, we may have it before the release of Spotify Wrapped 2023.
