Whether you have just received your A-Level results and secured your spot at University, or you are simply returning for another year, you may be on the lookout for opportunities to make the most of your uni experience. From competing in a sport, to finding friends to travel with, I asked students from a range of universities what the best thing they have done alongside their studies is. The best way to make friends, find new interests, expand your career opportunities and make memories at uni is definitely getting out of your comfort zone and getting involved in as much as possible.
Write for your student paper
Almost half of the people I spoke to revealed that writing for their University paper has been the highlight of their University experience. Over the last two years I have loved writing for Redbrick Paper at the University of Birmingham. I have met loads of amazing people, attended and reviewed concerts and shows for free, and interviewed some of my favourite artists. This is also a great way to enter into the journalism industry and network, gain experience and discover professional opportunities.
Join a sport
Whether you join to blow off some steam and have a laugh, or you compete in the University league, playing a sport at Uni is an amazing way to meet likeminded people, get fit, boost your mental health, and go on fun trips. From joining campus league netball to competing in hockey club to setting up a rollerskating society, many of the students I spoke with consider joining a sport the best thing they have done at University. Becoming a member of the University of Birmingham Climbing Society has undoubtedly been the best decision I made at uni. Through climbing I have learnt new skills, gone on some amazing trips across the UK and competed for my University.

Travel
University is the perfect place to meet friends and travel together. From study abroad opportunities to society trips, to joining a cadet group, you will always find likeminded people to adventure with. This summer I had an amazing time inter railing across Europe with my university friends.
Socialise and meet new people
University is of course known for its lively social culture and meeting friends is definitely a big part of the uni experience. From moving into a house with great people to having drinks at the cinema before a night out, most people I spoke with expressed how much socialising with peers has shaped their uni experience.
Part-time work
Most universities have an array of well paid part time jobs on offer which I highly recommend applying for. Whether you fancy helping to run open days or working at the student bar, you will be working alongside other students and developing skills to pop own your CV. This is a great way to help fund your time at Uni.
