The Best Fiction Podcasts You Must Check Out

Zoe Kramer December 23, 2022

Most podcasts fall into the nonfiction category. Some of the most popular podcasts go into in-depth discussions on society, culture, politics, business, and music. These podcasts can be insightful and interesting, but sometimes we all want a bit of an escape from reality. Similar to listening to audiobooks, podcasts can be a great way to engage in a story while simultaneously engaging in other activities that wouldn’t be possible to do while reading a book, such as doing the dishes, gardening, or going for a walk. Here are some of the best fiction podcasts to start binging.

Wooden Overcoats

Wooden Overcoats is a sitcom about competing undertakers on the island of Piffling. The Funn siblings, Rudyard and Antigone, square up against their flashy new rival, Eric Chapman. It’s macabre, quirky, and endlessly hilarious. It began back in 2015 and completed its fourth season in March of 2022.

If you’re a fan of true crime, you might enjoy this not-so-true crime tale of a reporter looking to find answers following the disappearance of three hundred people from a small town in Tennessee. It’s a completed story, having first aired in October of 2018 and run two seasons. It’s also available in novel form.

The Magnus Archives

If you’re a horror buff, one of the best fiction podcasts to listen to is the Magnus Archives. It’s an anthology series that comes out weekly, and centres around a mysterious organisation called the Magnus Institute and follows its head archivist, Jonathan Sims. The podcast delves into the strange, the unsettling and the supernatural, and is sure to send a shiver down your spine.

Welcome To Night Vale

Welcome To Night Vale is one of the most well-known fiction podcasts, and it’s a classic for a reason. Listeners tune into news bulletins from the desert town of Night Vale, a place where hooded figures, strange glowing lights and all kinds of supernatural phenomenon are mundane parts of everyday life. Its surreal storytelling is one-of-a-kind and completely gripping.

The Amelia Project

This award winning podcast follows a secret agency that specialises in making people disappear. Each episode of this show follows a different client going through the process of faking their death and gaining a new identity. It’s darkly funny and full of all kinds of twists and turns. It’s currently running its fifth season.
