The highly anticipated sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water was released in December 2022, a decade after the first instalment. Reviews are now in and like most massive blockbusters, it has spilt people’s opinions So what do people think of Avatar this time around?
Avatar: The Way of Water
The second instalment of this much-loved world sees Jake Sully return. He is now living with his family that he has with Ney’tiri and they have four children.
Everything seems to be perfect in Pandora, until they are forced to leave their home and flee to the Metkayina reef people. The family struggles to learn the ways of the water and are still being hunted down by the sky people.
Will Jake be able to protect his family and fight for freedom, or will there be a price to pay?

What Do People Think Of The New Avatar Movie?
As happens with highly anticipated films, some people are underwhelmed and others can’t get enough of it. This is what seems to have occurred with Avatar 2.
Writing for Empire Online, Nick De Semlyen awards the film a perfect five stars. He writes:
“[Avatar: The Way of Water] is so dazzling to behold that adjectives like “dazzling” seem too anaemic to apply. It’s a leap beyond even what he pulled off with the first film, a phantasmagorical, fully immersive waking dream of a movie.’
In stark contrast, Mark Kermode, for The Guardian labels it as a “lumbering three-hour slog” and hands the film a two-star rating. Kermode writes that the second film has “the same honkingly bland anti-imperial/anti-colonial/eco-friendly metaphor that gave the first Avatar the illusion of gravitas.”
Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have awarded Avatar: The Way of Water a 92%, from over 10,000 reviews.
One reviewer, who awarded the film five stars, wrote, “You won’t be disappointed everything from the cast to the animation was on point. Buckle up total ride of emotions, I’ve been waiting years for this movie finally!”.
However, another critic argued “ terrible dialogue. not able to fully follow the story. too long.”
So there you have it. Very mixed reviews and, perhaps unsurprisingly, this is one you will have to see before you can make up your own mind and potentially add your review to the mix.
