There is nothing better than curling up in your bed and hearing the pitter-patter of rainfall on your window. Or sitting on your couch with a hot chocolate, ready for a film night, with some light atmospheric background noise from the rain.
We love the soothing sound of the rain, but why is that?
Why Do We Find The Sound Of Rain Soothing?
The rhythmic sound of rain tapping on your window or roof has a similar effect to that of a lullaby. It physically alters the neural pathways of our brain to put us in a relaxed state.
According to studies, when we hear the sound of rain, our brain unconsciously generates alpha waves, which result in states similar to sleeping. Hence, rainfall relaxes us and makes us feel safe and comfortable.
Researchers have also found that we love the sound of rain because we find it non-threatening. Steady rainfall has a monotonous cadence that lacks sudden or loud interruptions, which often triggers something known as the ’threat-activated vigilance system’.
What Is Pink Noise?
You may have heard of white noise, which is a natural but insignificant noise, including a whirring fan, TV static or a hissing radiator.
However, there is somethig called ‘pink noise’ which is more of a soothing background noise, which usually calms and relaxes a person. The sound of rain is classed as such.

Pink noise uses a consistent pitch or frequency to create a ‘flat’ sound.
Steady rainfall is a common example of pink noise. Other examples are rustling leaves, waves crashing or a heartbeat.
What Are The Benefits Of Listening To Rain Sounds?
There are not many things that relax your mind and calm it down like the sound of rain does.
Aside from helping you get to sleep rain is also a common sound to have playing whilst working or studying, as it helps people focus on the task at hand in a calm state.
Rain has been labelled as a therapeutic noise for many reasons such as:
- Being meditative
- Helping to calm your senses
- Improving your concentration
