Alternatives To Going To The Gym

Zoe Kramer February 5, 2023

For many people, the simple answer to fitness is to hit the gym. And while that may work for some people, for others the gym isn’t an ideal setup. Maybe you’re not the most comfortable there, don’t have the time, or don’t want to pay for a membership. Whatever the case may be, there are plenty of other ways to work out and get exercise. Here are some of the best alternatives to going to the gym.

Workout From Home

Popularized during the peak of lockdown, there’s no reason why you can’t continue home workouts, even as Covid restrictions have eased. Even if you don’t have any exercise equipment at home, there are plenty of guided video workouts that require nothing but some athletic clothes and a little bit of space. You can also run stairs at home — provided your housemates are ok with it, of course.

Go Cycling

Instead of getting on the Peloton, why not get out into the world and see some scenery? Even if you don’t have a bike of your own, you can easily rent one and hit some local trails. Cycling is great for strengthening your legs, and for cardio as well.

Try Yoga

If you want to work on your flexibility, one of the best ways is to take a yoga class. Not only does it help with fitness, but it also incorporates breath exercises and wellness into the practice, too. If you don’t feel like signing up for a class, you can find a wide range of instruction online from the comfort of your home.

Take A Dance Class

Who said exercise has to be work? Dance classes are a great way to stay fit, and they have the added benefit of being a lot of fun. You can get some cardio in and bust a move at the same time.

Learn Martial Arts

Another great alternative to going to the gym is practicing martial arts. Whether you’re looking to learn self defense or just want a new hobby to try, martial arts are a great way to work out, and they’re very rewarding, too. Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Judo and Karate are all great options, just to name a few.

Go Hiking

Walking may not seem like much work, but it can be a great way to get exercise. Going for a long hike is a great way to get some cardio and soak up some nature at the same time.
