Social media has the 21st century in a chokehold from which we can’t escape. It’s impossible to ignore, and sometimes we want to get off the grid entirely. Love it or hate it, social media has completely changed our society. But does that mean we have to spend the rest of our days mindlessly scrolling and further indenting our pinky fingers?
Sometimes we need a break, a detox from the apps and to enjoy reality. But how do we know when to bring ourselves back down to earth? Well, to start, here are some signs to look out for.
You’re constantly comparing
Social media fuels the unhealthy habit of comparing yourself to others. As soon as you open Instagram you’re attacked with photos of other people’s achievements, relationships, nights out, fitness photos etc. No matter how happy and secure in ourselves we are, this constant exposure isn’t good for us. And without much context behind the photo, is it any wonder we feel bad? If this feeling is all too familiar, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your relationship with social media.

Your opinions aren’t your own
Social media has a strict moral code and, sometimes, an over-ethical conscience. TikTok comments and spam accounts enforce a rigid view of right and wrong and leave little room for human error. There are millions of opinions, beliefs and discourse online. But when you consume too much, it’s hard to figure out where you really stand. Taking time out from social media is useful in helping you form your own judgments.
It affects your social interactions
If you’re repeatedly checking your phone in a social setting and not engaging with your friends, it’s probably time to put it down. Start off small by turning your phone off at your next event. And encourage others to try it in case you’re worried about feeling alone.

Your screen time is off the charts
Looking at your screen-time usage is a good way to figure out if you need a break from your phone. See which apps you spend the most time on and start gradually lowering it. You can set limits on apps and decide when you want to access them.
You experience phone separation anxiety
A lot of people suffer from phone anxiety. Simply not having a phone at hand or going long periods without it can cause distress. The multitude of social media apps can worsen anxiety symptoms. Take a look at these tips to manage your phone anxiety.
