Are you going through a stressful time? Feeling like your mind is stuck in overdrive? Overthinking every move you make? If this is you then it sounds like meditation might help you. Here are some simple steps to meditate as a beginner.
Environment
Firstly you’ll want to find a space that you feel safe and comfortable in. This could be in your bedroom, your lounge or even outside in your garden. And it doesn’t matter if it’s raining! As long as you don’t mind getting a little wet the rain can often make meditation even more calming.
Lay a yoga mat down or a blanket if you don’t have one. And if you want to, light some candles, spray some calming aromas and get comfortable. This is your dedicated time.
Find comfort
Once you’ve found a comfortable environment, you will want to find comfort in your position. Try lying down flat with your palms facing the sky, or taking a seated position with your hands rested to your side or on your legs. Find whatever gives you comfort.
If you start to feel uncomfortable throughout your meditation though, you can change it up! One of the aims of meditation is to find peace and comfort within yourself.

Set a timer
Set yourself a timer. How long do you want to be meditating for? This is not an essential step, but it can be handy if you want to do a certain length of meditation. Try setting a ten minute timer on your phone and seeing how you feel after it. Or you could start even lower and work your way up.
The main thing to remember with meditation is that this time is yours, so make sure you do what feels right for you.
Breathe
Throughout your mediation, try to take deep breaths in and out. To stop your mind from wandering, try and focus on your breath. Every time your mind wanders just bring it back into a safe space and be kind to yourself.
It’s natural for our minds to start spiralling back into our usual thoughts, but that’s why meditation is so powerful. Work on separating your thoughts from your daily lifestyle and give yourself that time to cleanse your thoughts.
Relax
And that’s it! That’s all you have to do to start or end your day in a positive mindset. Once you’ve finished your meditation you can go about your day as usual but with a happier outlook on the world.
Give it a go. You may worry about trying to meditate as a beginner but there really is nothing to it.
