Waterloo Road was confirmed to be returning last year and we finally have an airdate for the long-awaited series. Coming back early next year, it’s not the only show returning in 2023.
There’s plenty to look forward to in 2023, with TV hotting up as soon as the New Year breaks. With Waterloo Roo coming back, here are some of our favourite shows that are also returning in 2023.
Waterloo Road Is Back
Everyone’s favourite high-school drama is making a return to the BBC early next year. Earlier today (December 6), the BBC Press office confirmed that 7 episodes of Waterloo Road would be dropping on January 3 2023. At an hour long each, there will definitely be enough drama to see us through until the next instalment.
Here’s what to look forward to in the up and coming series:
“Across the term, Waterloo Road’s teachers and parents are going to have to learn on their feet as they try to navigate the ever-changing social landscape – from teen homelessness to the cost of living, being LGBTQ+, racism, sexism, mental health and everything else facing young teens today.
“Amongst the chaos, the students, faculty and parents still make time for friendships, fun, and a few romances. The pupils have a lot to contend with this term, but they will learn to lean on one another to survive the year and try to stay out of detention as much as possible.”
Starring in the continuation is Angela Griffin, Adam Thomas, Katie Griffiths, Kym Marsh and many more. All 7 episodes will be uploaded to BBC iPlayer on January 3, so you can binge-watch to your heart’s content.
What Other Shows Are Returning In 2023?
If Waterloo Road isn’t your taste, there’s plenty more to be looking forward to next year.
Doctor Who
Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation of the Doctor bowed out in the epic The Power Of The Doctor which saw a lot of familiar faces return. Though fans weren’t surprised, the general public may have been a tad confused to see Jodie regenerate into David Tennant at the end of the episode.
No, he’s not back as 10, but a new incarnation — 14! Ncuti Gatwa was then confirmed to be playing 15, so we have a few episodes with David Tennant once again.
Three episodes will air next November to celebrate Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary and will start Catherine Tate, Yasmin Finney and Bernard Cribbins. Neil Patrick Harris will also be in the specials, seemingly in a villainous role.
Russel T Davies, the returning showrunner, confirmed that Ncuti’s first episode will air in the festive period of 2023. He’ll be joined alongside Millie Gibson as companion Ruby Sunday.
You Season 4
Because after watching a man in a tight suit fight aliens, you may want something a little more murder-y. You may want…You.
After the events of Season 3, we last saw Joe flee to Paris after killing his wife Love. Seeming like the perfect match, the two psychopaths just couldn’t work it out. Love gave their son to Marienne, telling her to run and not look back.
Series 4 picks up where we left off, with Joe making a new life for himself. Heading to London, we’re introduced to Kate (Charlotte Richie), the new love interest for Joe.
Certain to bring all the gruesome drama the last three series have given us, You season 4 will drop in two parts. The first will be on February 9 2023, and the second on March 9, 2023.
Happy Valley
Back after 7 years, Sally Wainwright’s critically acclaimed crime drama Happy Valley is back for a final series. The multi-BAFTA award-winning show sees all the familiar faces returning one last time. Set in the present day, there’s a lot of time to cover since the last series.
Fans will be treated to six-hour-long episodes starting at 9 pm on January 1 on BBC 1. Here’s what BBC Media Centre has to say about the up-and-coming series:
“When Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, it sparks a chain of events that leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce [James Norton].
“Her grandson, Ryan [Rhys Connah], is now sixteen and has ideas of his own about the kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father, leaving Catherine’s sister Clare [Siobhan Finneran] caught in the middle. In another part of the valley, a local pharmacist gets in over his head when a neighbour is arrested.”
Promising to get your bum on the edge of the seat, nails bitten down raw — Happy Valley series 3 will be an explosive end to the fan-favourite crime drama.
Loki Series 2
And just in case you’ve had enough of psychopaths and murders…oh wait. Well, this will definite be a bit more lighthearted than the above.
Loki series 2 will return to Disney+ in the summer of 2023, with filming having just finished.
Not a lot is known about the sequel to the first series but we’ll be hoping for some returning faces from Sylvie, Mobius and Casey at least.
Speaking to Marvel, Tom Hiddlestone spoke of how glad he was to get another series:
“I want to say thank you to the audience because without the audience, we wouldn’t be able to make a season two,” he added. “I hope season one was full of surprises. And I think season two will be full of even more.”
Whether we get more crocodiles, time travel or marmite love interests is remained to be seen. Eitherway, we’ll be tuning in once the second season drops on Disney+.
There are so many great shows returning in 2023 that it’s hard to pick which one is our favourite!
